When Samuel McWilliam came over from Ireland to Australia in 1857 with dreams of starting his own vineyard, he hadn't envisioned it would be so arduous. At this time, rural NSW was rife with bushrangers, horse thieves and notorious gangs. Samuel unwittingly bought a stolen colt and mare from horse thief John Gibbs. When the police came, he lost both the horses and his money. Samuel's tenacious spirit, grit and honest hard work overcame all challenges, successfully establishing his 80-acre vineyard in 1877. This determination and passion were soon passed onto his son JJ and live on to this day, in the sixth generation of McWilliam winemakers.
